Hiking tour Tenerife: what a guide and a transfer add

Every hiking tour Tenerife listing on this site comes with a live guide, and that is where the likeness ends. Eight of the 14 hikes include a pickup, five start at a meeting point you reach on your own, and group limits run from four to twelve. Here is what the guide does, where each transfer leaves from and what each price covers, from $27 per person.

Quick answer

The short answer. A guide comes with all 14 hikes; a transfer does not. To be collected from your hotel on the south coast, take the $100 forest hike above Masca, which has the most reviews here, 466 at 4.9. For the smallest group, two hikes stop at four people. For the lowest price, the $27 Anaga walk, where pickup is only an option. Our top pick for a hiking tour Tenerife day is the $245 Teide night climb, nine people at most.

The guide

What the guide actually does on the trail

A live guide on all 14 hikes. What each one does depends on the trail.

On every hiking tour Tenerife operators list here, a live guide walks with you. On the Masca Gorge walk it is a local mountain guide with long experience in Masca, who takes care of your safety and explains the nature, geology and culture. On the short Anaga walk you hear about plants that exist only in the Canary Islands and the legends of Anaga.

Pace is part of the job. The Anaga forest circuit promises no time pressure, with the walking pace adjusted to the group. Mike from the United Kingdom: «The pace was steady, and there was time to stop, enjoy the forest, take photos and chat.» Susannah from the United States, on the gorge walk: «…you should do it with this guide and not on your own, because of the rich history and care that he imparts to the experience.»

Getting there

Pickup, a meeting point, or your own way back

Eight pickups, one option, five meeting points.

Transfer is the line to read first on a hiking tour Tenerife listing. A pickup is not always at your door: most listings name a town or a set point, not your hotel. Reviewers notice the difference. Jana from Germany, on the relict-woods hike above Masca: «The organization was smooth, the transfer was on time, and the small group made the experience very pleasant.» Anne from Belgium, on the Teide summit hike, which has no transfer: «Would have liked transportation included in the price.»

In the price

Food, gear and what you carry yourself

Food on two hikes, boots checked on one.

Lunch is not in the price of any hiking tour Tenerife listing here. Two include food: a light picnic on the forest hike above Masca, and a sunrise picnic with a warm drink and snacks on the Teide night climb. On the summit hike, you carry your own water and food.

On the night climb, proper hiking boots are mandatory and are checked at the trail entrance; warm layers, a hat and winter gloves are strongly recommended, and equipment can be provided on request. Simon from Spain: «They provided all the gear one needed to go up, so if you don’t have something they’ll get it for you.» The gorge walk turns away trainers and sandals.

Before you book

Five things to check before you pay

A few minutes on the listing makes a hiking tour Tenerife morning go smoothly.

  • Where the pickup is

A pickup in Los Cristianos or Adeje is not a pickup at your hotel. Only the forest hike above Masca names hotel pickup along the south coast.

  • How you get back

The Teno walk ends in Masca village and you take the public bus back, about one and a half euros, at your own cost. The gorge walk ends at the coast, where a boat takes the group to Los Gigantes.

  • The group minimum

The Teno walk needs at least six adults. If fewer book, the listing offers another date, another activity or your money back.

  • Your fitness

The Teide night climb calls itself strenuous and says a high level of physical fitness is essential. The Teide summit hike asks for good physical condition.

  • Tickets on top

The Teide summit hike does not include the cable car ticket, twenty-two euros a person. The gorge walk sells entrance and transport tickets separately.
