Tenerife volcano hike: Pico Viejo, lava and the summit of Teide

A Tenerife volcano hike on this site means one of four guided days in Teide National Park: the 800-metre-wide crater of Pico Viejo, an evening walk past a lava tube to a 2,000-metre peak, or one of two climbs to the summit of Teide. Below: the ground each one covers, its effort, and what each price includes.

What counts here

Four volcano trails in Teide National Park

Four listings walk the volcanic ground of the national park; two more look at it from the forest above Masca.

Of the fourteen guided hikes on this site, four put you on the volcano itself, all inside Teide National Park, which the night-climb listing describes as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Each Tenerife volcano hike there has a different target: the crater of Pico Viejo, a 2,000-metre peak beside the ground of the latest eruptions, or the summit of Teide, which the listings call the highest point of Spain.

The four differ most in effort. The evening hike covers 5.5 km with about 200 m of climb. Pico Viejo gives seven hours on foot, and its listing calls the route moderate. The two summit days each cover 10 km and climb 1,380 m or 1,500 m, and the night climb is described as strenuous.

Two forest hikes above Masca add volcanic views without a volcanic trail. One crosses pine forest with views of the Teide volcano and the site of the last eruption in 1909; the other looks across Teide National Park and its dozens of volcanoes. Julia from Germany, after the summit day: «We also received lots of interesting information about Teide and the volcanoes along the way.»

The crater

Pico Viejo crater: what the listing says

The newest Tenerife volcano hike on this site, and the only one built around the crater.

  • The crater

An enormous 800-metre-wide volcanic crater in shades of red, orange and black, with panoramic views of Mount Teide and the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The day

Ten hours in all: an hour by van, seven hours hiking in Teide National Park, and an hour back by van.

  • Who it suits

Moderate difficulty and a reasonable level of fitness. The listing does not recommend it for people with serious mobility issues or vertigo.

  • What to bring

Proper hiking shoes, water, sun protection and comfortable clothing. The itinerary may be adjusted depending on weather conditions.

  • Group and guide

Up to 8 hikers with an experienced local mountain guide, in English, Lithuanian or Spanish. Pickup is included; the listing does not name the towns. New listing, no reviews yet.

Lava and a lava tube

The evening hike through the latest eruptions

The shortest Tenerife volcano hike here, at 5.5 km, and the only one with a lava tube.

The $105 sunset hike visits a 2,000-metre peak in Teide National Park, not the summit of Teide. Its listing puts the route through the area of the last volcanic eruptions, between two zones of the volcano’s latest eruptions, and adds a visit to a natural lava tube. The walk itself is a moderate 2.5 hours, 5.5 km in all with about 200 m of climb, and the listing asks for moderate physical fitness.

It also has the smallest group on this page: up to four hikers, with pickup and return in Adeje and a guide in English, Spanish or Russian. The listing says the sunset route runs only with the group tour option, and that you meet almost no other hikers on it. It is rated 5.0 on 18 reviews. Lene from Norway: «The lava, that creates a special silence, makes you very relaxed.»

To the summit

Two ways to the top of Teide

Both cover 10 km; one climbs by night, the other meets at the cable car.

The night climb, our top pick at $245, is the Tenerife volcano hike with the most packed into it. Pickup is in Los Cristianos, and the hike starts at about 4 a.m. by headlamp, depending on sunrise time. You watch the sunrise from a viewpoint at 3,200 m with a picnic, a warm drink and snacks, and reach the summit at 3,718 m between 10:00 and 11:00. The listing gives 10 km and 1,380 m of climb, and the itinerary comes down by cable car in 20 minutes; it does not say whether that ticket is in the price. Jacques from Belgium: «The early morning ascent to the crater was amazing, without a doubt one of the best ways to experience Teide.»

The $212 summit day meets at the Teide cable car car park, with no pickup. Its listing gives 10 km with 1,500 m of climb, normally 5 to 6 hours to the top. The cable car ticket, twenty-two euros a person, is not included, and the cable car runs only when the wind is under 35 km/h; otherwise you walk down. Bring 2 to 3 litres of water and enough food. It is rated 4.8 on 89 reviews.

Before you book

Five things to check before you pay

Five details that change the day on a Tenerife volcano hike.

  • Boots on the night climb

Proper hiking boots are mandatory, and staff check footwear at the trail entrance; access may be denied without them. Equipment can be provided on request.

  • Warm layers above 3,000 m

The night-climb listing strongly recommends warm layers, a hat and winter gloves, as it can feel significantly colder up there, especially at night.

  • The cable car ticket

On the summit day from the car park, the ticket is not in the price and the cable car runs only in light wind. The night-climb listing does not say.

  • Where pickup is

Los Cristianos for the night climb, Adeje for the evening hike; Pico Viejo includes pickup but names no towns. The summit day has none.

  • Food and water

Of the four volcano trails, only the night climb includes food: a sunrise picnic with a warm drink and snacks. On the summit day, bring 2 to 3 litres of water and food.

Our verdict

Which volcano trail to book

Book the night climb at $245 if you want the summit of Teide: our top pick, rated 5.0 on 114 reviews, with pickup and a sunrise picnic. For the crater, one listing goes to Pico Viejo; it is new, with no reviews to weigh yet.

Common questions

Tenerife volcano hike: questions, answered

Can you hike Teide at night for sunrise?

Yes. On the $245 night climb the hike starts at about 4 a.m. by headlamp, depending on sunrise time. You watch the sunrise from a viewpoint at 3,200 m and reach the summit, 3,718 m, between 10:00 and 11:00. Pickup is in Los Cristianos.

How hard is a Tenerife volcano hike to the summit?

Hard. The night-climb listing calls it a strenuous hike, says a high level of physical fitness is essential, and adds that the altitude above 3,000 m makes it more challenging. The summit day asks that all participants be in good physical condition. The evening hike and Pico Viejo are listed as moderate.

How long does it take to climb Teide?

The summit-day listing says it normally takes 5 to 6 hours to reach the top, over 10 km and 1,500 m of climb, in a 7-hour tour. The night climb is a hike of 6 to 6.5 hours, 10 km and 1,380 m of climb, inside a 10-hour day.

Is the Teide cable car included?

On the $212 summit day, no: the ticket, twenty-two euros a person, is extra, and the cable car runs only when the wind is under 35 km/h; otherwise you walk down. The night climb comes down by cable car in its itinerary, but the listing does not say whether that ticket is in the price.

What should I wear for a Teide night hike?

Proper hiking boots: they are mandatory and checked at the trail entrance. Warm layers, a hat and winter gloves are strongly recommended, as conditions above 3,000 m can feel significantly colder, especially at night. Equipment can be provided on request.

Is there a sunset hike on Teide?

Yes, the $105 evening hike from Adeje, though it does not go to the summit: it climbs a 2,000-metre peak in Teide National Park, 5.5 km in all, and visits a natural lava tube. Groups are up to four, and it is rated 5.0 on 18 reviews.

Your options
