Tenerife Teide hike: two guided ways to the summit

A Tenerife Teide hike to the very top comes in two forms on this site: a day hike that meets at the Teide cable car car park, and a night climb with pickup in Los Cristianos that watches the sunrise on the way up. This guide sets them side by side: the route, the hours, the climb, what the cable car costs and what the listings say about a permit.

Quick answer

The short answer. For a shorter day, book the guided hike to the peak at $212: 10 km and 1,500 m of climbing from the Teide cable car car park, rated 4.8 from 89 reviews. For sunrise on the way up and pickup in Los Cristianos, our top pick is the night climb at $245, rated 5.0 from 114 reviews. Either Tenerife Teide hike ends on the summit, the highest point of Spain. Which hikes reach the top

Two hikes go to the summit; two stay lower

Two of the fourteen listings climb to the top. Check which one you are booking.

Four of the fourteen hikes on this site walk in Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, but only two of them are a Tenerife Teide hike to the summit. The guided hike to the peak is a 10 km climb to 3,715 metres. The night climb reaches the summit at 3,718 metres between 10:00 and 11:00. If you have been looking for a Mount Teide summit tour, these are the two listings that go all the way up.

The other two stay lower, and neither is a summit day. The sunset hike with pickup in Adeje is a moderate 2.5-hour walk to a 2,000-meter peak in the park, with a lava tube on the way; it does not go to the summit of Teide. The Pico Viejo crater hike crosses volcanic ground to an 800-meter-wide crater with views of Mount Teide. It is a new listing with no reviews yet, and it does not climb to the summit either.

The day hike

The guided hike to the peak, step by step

Taken from the listing’s own description. This Tenerife Teide hike runs 7 hours on paper; the walk up alone normally takes 5 to 6.

  • Meet at the cable car car park

The group meets in the morning at the car park of the Teide cable car. There is no pickup. Anne from Belgium: «Would have liked transportation included in the price.»

  • The kit check

The guide sets off after checking the materials. The listing does not print the list, so ask for it when you book.

  • Climb 10 km

About 10 km of hiking with 1,500 metres of positive elevation, to 3,715 metres (12,188 ft). Normally it takes 5 to 6 hours to reach the summit.

  • Stand on the summit

The listing calls Teide the highest peak of Spain, and its description mentions views of Tenerife and the surrounding islands.

  • Ride down, if it runs

The cable car takes the group down only in good weather, when the wind is under 35 km/h. The ticket, twenty-two euros a person, is not in the price.

  • Or walk down

If the cable car is not running, you walk down the mountain on foot: 10 km more, about 20 km for the day.

  • Bring water and food

The listing asks for 2 to 3 litres of water and enough food, and suggests a 2 to 3 hour nap before the hike.

The night climb

The night climb to sunrise and the summit, hour by hour

Our top pick, at $245 per person, with pickup and return in Los Cristianos. Times are as the listing gives them.

  • Pickup in Los Cristianos

The day starts and ends in Los Cristianos and runs 10 hours in all. The group is limited to 9 participants, with a guide in English or Spanish.

  • Boots at the trail entrance

Proper hiking boots are mandatory. Authorized staff check footwear at the trail entrance, and access may be denied without them. Equipment can be provided on request.

  • Start at about 4am

You set off at about 4am by night, depending on sunrise time, with headlamps lighting the path. The hike itself takes 6 to 6.5 hours.

  • Sunrise at 3,200 metres

Sunrise is watched from a viewpoint at 3,200 metres, with a picnic: a warm drink and snacks.

  • Summit at 3,718 metres

Between 10:00 and 11:00 you reach the summit, the highest point of Spain, for a 360-degree view. Distance 10 km, elevation gain 1,380 metres.

  • Down by cable car

The itinerary lists a 20-minute cable car ride down. The listing does not say whether the ticket is in the price.

Permit, cable car, checks

The permit, the cable car and the boot check

What the listings say, and where they say nothing.

Neither Mount Teide hiking tour on this site mentions a permit for the top of the mountain, and neither says one is in the price. What the night climb does say is that authorized staff check footwear at the trail entrance and can turn you away without proper boots. If a permit matters to your plans, ask through the listing before you pay, since we will not guess at it.

The cable car figures in both days, but the money is handled differently. On the day hike to the peak, the ticket costs twenty-two euros a person and is not included; it runs only when the wind is under 35 km/h, and otherwise the group walks down. The night climb lists a 20-minute ride down in its itinerary without saying who pays. On either Tenerife Teide hike, keep some money for the ride.

Fitness

How fit you need to be, in the listings’ own words

Strenuous, at altitude and long. The listings put it plainly.

Neither summit listing softens it. The night climb calls itself a strenuous hike: «A high level of physical fitness is essential», and the altitude above 3,000 metres makes the route even more challenging. Previous hiking or mountain experience is recommended but not required. The day hike to the peak asks that all participants be in good physical condition. A Tenerife Teide hike is a long climb at altitude.

Reviewers say the same. Julia from Germany on the day hike: «The tour was strenuous, but definitely worth recommending!» Fabien from France on the night climb: «if you are fit, we highly recommend this experience!!»

  • Water and food

  • Money for the cable car

On the day hike, twenty-two euros a person for the ride down, if it runs.
